Introducing Your Neighborhood Farm

By Kirsten Simmons
Imagine what it would be like to put a farm in every neighborhood. Imagine, if every farm, instead of depleting the soil, actually helped regenerate it, using sustainable, natural growth cycles so the land could thrive for generations. Then imagine if each of those sustainable neighborhood farms also partnered with other local farms to develop processes and systems that helped the whole local food community thrive to the point where big agribusiness farms could no longer compete.
That is the goal at Ecosystem Farm. Since they are still working on stage one, you can be part of the mission from the ground floor.
Ecosystem Farm is located at 1088 Bouldercrest Drive, just a couple of miles east of East Atlanta Village (EAV). They offer yoga on the farm on Sunday afternoons, fresh eggs from a protected range flock of 100+ chickens, and several ways to get a weekly share of the harvest.
If you’re interested in a weekly community-supported agriculture share, the fall season starts on October 1, and runs through December 18. This program offers shareholders weekly harvest from the farm. Pickups are Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm on the farm at 1088 Bouldercrest Drive. Several different options are available, but all will include a protein (eggs or mushrooms), an herb, and six to eight fruits or vegetables each week.
Yoga classes will start again on September 17 at 4:00pm on the farm, with a suggested donation of $10 paid to the instructor. The farm also plans to offer classes on gardening, food preservation, beekeeping, reducing plastic waste, and more. Also in the works is a community orchard in the field fronting Bouldercrest Drive. All neighbors and interested parties are encouraged to attend one of the planning sessions at the Ecosystem Farm table at the EAV Farmers Market to get involved.
Imagine fresh meals in your EAV home, from a farm down the street. Visit www.ecosystemfarm.com for more info.
