Grant Park Spring Tour of Homes

By Christy Simo
Get a glimpse of the evolution of Grant Park through 165 years at the 41st Spring Tour of Homes May 16–17, 2015.
As the “living small” trend continues to gather steam, the tour has selected homes that showcase how creatively thinking about a smaller footprint in Grant Park can be a big deal. Throughout the last century and a half, residents have found innovative ways to grow their intown dwellings while keeping the neighborhood’s personality intact and without losing the property’s historic character and charm.
This year’s tour features 12 homes and sites, as well as a “meet the builder” special tour at a newly renovated 1904 home and educational seminars about researching your historic home and remodeling tips.
As part of the tour, see inside a house built in 1890, a 1913 bungalow that was remodeled in 2013, a 1940 Sears Honor-Bilt house, a new home built in 2014 on an undeveloped lot, and not one, but two early 20th century homes currently undergoing rehabilitation.
“This is not your usual tour of homes,” says 2015 Tour of Homes Chair Abbi Rabeneck. “Between the special sites, the ‘meet the architect’ sessions and the two properties undergoing restoration, there is something for everyone.”
Along with the usual crop of houses, there will be several additional sites on the tour, including the Kairos Church, a Gothic Revival structure originally built in 1884 at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Grant Street, and the Atlanta Police Mounted Horse Patrol facility at the end of Cherokee Street.
Proceeds from the event go toward the Grant Park Neighborhood Association to support neighborhood projects, including the restoration of the Erskine Fountain in Grant Park, where you can also purchase tickets on the day of the tour.
Volunteers may still be needed at the tour sites, so sign up now atwww.gpna.org/tourofhomes. Volunteers will receive a complimentary ticket to this year’s Spring Tour of Homes and to the neighborhood’s annual costume party and fundraiser, the Mothball.
Special thanks to the Grant Park annual sponsors Six Feet Under, Rob Smith & Associates, Kroger and The Justin Landis Group, as well as the individual business sponsors that are supporting this year’s tour, including Round Here Renovations, Wag-A-Lot, Prosper Home Care, Agave Restaurant, Adams Realtors, Botwinick & Botwinick and Ene’s Cleaning.
