From transforming a stadium to a bowl game win, along with multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, it was another successful year for Georgia State University Athletics both on and off the field.
A football season that began with the opening of Georgia State Stadium following a five-month construction process to transform it from Turner Field concluded with the Panthers winning the AutoNation Cure Bowl for the program’s first bowl game win. Georgia State went 7-5 under first-year head coach Shawn Elliott to garner the most wins for the program as a member of The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
Success continued into basketball season where head coach Ron Hunter’s crew went 24-11 and won the Sun Belt Conference tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in four years. Over the last five years, the Panthers have more wins than any other NCAA Division I program in Georgia, including three seasons of 24 or more wins.
Women’s tennis also represented Georgia State in the NCAA tournament after winning a second Sun Belt Conference title in the last three seasons.
In the classroom, Georgia State student-athletes maintained a 3.15 GPA for the 2017-18 academic year and currently hold a cumulative GPA of 3.24. GSU student-athletes have maintained a GPA above 3.0 for the last 10 years.
The Panthers took the Georgia State-Georgia Southern Rivalry Trophy for the third-straight season. Among the biggest wins in the series this year was football earning a win over the Eagles on their home field in Statesboro.
