As part of the Phoenix Flies series of tours, Historic Sylvester Cemetery will be conducting two free tours on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00am, and Saturday, March 16 at 11:00am.
Sylvester Cemetery is the final resting place of many of the founders of East Atlanta, including James “Spanish Jim” Brown, who owned the land lot at the intersection of Glenwood and Flat Shoals, J.W. McWilliams, founder of the first store in East Atlanta Village, and the Terry Family, who operated Terry’s Mill.
Other notable residents of the cemetery are Martha Brown, the namesake of Martha Brown United Methodist Church; Jake Hall, former sheriff of DeKalb County; and country music star Fiddlin’ John Carson.
The tours will give insights into the history and development of East Atlanta and southwest Dekalb. Phoenix Flies is a yearly series of free tours organized by the Atlanta Preservation Center. The Historic Sylvester Cemetery organization is thrilled to once again be a part of this wonderful event.
Tours will assemble at the intersection of Braeburn Circle and Josephine Avenue. For more information phone Larry Johnson at 404-664-2034.
