East Atlanta Library Friends’ Book Club

By Shannon Sanders

FEAL (Friends of East Atlanta Library) are excited that what stemmed from the Fulton County Library System’s One Book, One Read program in January 2022, inspired the newest board member, Sheila Levy, to establish a book club for the Friends of the East Atlanta Library.

Sheila and her husband moved from Kentucky during COVID, and she found out about the organization through an article in the Porch Press. She wanted to meet new people in her community and the ongoing pandemic restrictions made that difficult. Fortunately, in 2021, she joined the FEAL board. After participating with other community members in the system-wide book club, reading the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, she stepped up and asked the Friends to sponsor a book club at the East Atlanta Library.

The Friends’ Book Club meets the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30pm to 7:45pm at the library located at 400 Flat Shoals Avenue. At the February 28 meeting, the group will discuss “Horse” by Geraldine Brooks. Anyone in the community is invited to attend the meeting. All are welcome, even if you have not previously participated in a meeting. At each meeting, participants choose the book for the following month. As all events at the library, the book club is free and open to the public.

Previous book club selections include: January 2023 – A choice of books by Amor Towles: A Gentleman in Moscow, Lincoln Highway, and Rules of Civility; October 2022 – The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray; September 2022: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie.

For a complete list of events at the library, please follow the Facebook page: @friendsofeastatlantalibrary.

And don’t forget to stop by the library and peruse the Book Sale Shelf for gently used books. It is available any time during library hours. Select books to purchase, pay from your phone, and enjoy. Books are $3 for hardbacks and $2 for softbacks and all proceeds benefit the East Atlanta Library. Donations of a little extra to help cover the processing costs are always appreciated.

The Friends would also like to invite everyone to support the East Atlanta branch by becoming a FEAL member at www.friendsofeastatlantalibrary.org. Membership is tax deductible, and all proceeds directly support the programs and supply needs at our East Atlanta branch.
