Dog lovers, mark your calendar. East Atlanta Village Farmers Market (EAVFM) goes to the dogs from 12:00pm to 3:00pm on Sunday, October 22, in celebration of the 5th Annual Dogtoberfest. This family friendly event features Halloween costume contests for dogs, low-cost microchips, a parade of adoptable pets, as well as delicious treats for both people and pets.
East Atlanta Village (EAV) resident Lauren Janis of Big Daddy Biscuits founded the festival in 2013 to celebrate responsible pet ownership. With an entrance fee of $5 per dog, $5 to enter the costume contest, but free for people, event proceeds fund a grant benefitting pet-focused nonprofits, in the past going to Lifeline Animal Project, Southern Animal Rescue, Pitties in the City, and Atlanta Beagle Rescue. This year’s grant is going to both PAWS Atlanta and Georgia English Bulldog Rescue.
As a 501(c)3, Dogtoberfest in EAV also will fund initiatives designed to make East Atlanta more pet friendly. In 2015, the organization installed a poop bag dispenser at the EAVFM space with plans to add more throughout the neighborhood. “East Atlanta has always been a pet-friendly community, that’s what makes it so special,” said Janis. “I’m so proud to see neighbors embrace Dogtoberfest. We look forward to offering a bigger and better event each year.”
