Community Farmers Markets Now Open

By Katie Hayes
Community Farmers Markets are unique outdoor local markets with a strong sense of community pride. You’ll find local, fresh, and sustainable produce at East Atlanta Village Farmers’ Market and Grant Park Farmers’ Market. As always, EBT/SNAP benefits are welcomed and doubled with the support of Wholesome Wave Georgia.
The East Atlanta Village Farmers Market has been voted the readers’ pick for the Best Outdoor Farmers’ Market in Creative Loafing four years in a row. There is an on-site “edible learning garden” where free classes on cooking, sustainability, art, and gardening are taught each week during the market. Local bands and artists flock to this in-town scene, which attracts over 750 weekly guests. The EAVFM is open every Thursday from April 18 through December 19 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm in the heart of East Atlanta Village.
Highlights for 2013 include the “My Market” Club sponsored by Georgia Organics, the WonderRoot Index, and weekly activities for all ages. New vendors this year include CalyRoad Creamery, Protea Wild Crafts, La Calavera Bakery, Simply Seoul Kimchee, Good Food Truck Indonesian Soup Cart, Sparta Imperial Mushrooms, Doux South pickles and more.
The Grant Park Farmers Market attracts over 1,500 weekly guests. Weekly free celebrity chef demos feature the top chefs in the south including Hugh Acheson, Kevin Gillespie, Virginia Willis, and many more. Shoppers, foodies, bloggers, and critics all agree that the Grant Park Farmers Market is the place to be on Sunday Mornings. The GPFM is open every Sunday from April 21 through December 22 from 9:30am to 1:30pmat the historic Milledge Fountain in Grant Park (600 Cherokee Avenue, 30312).
Highlights for 2013 include the “My Market” Club sponsored by Georgia Organics, instruction in cooking and living seasonally by Sarah Dodge (Octopus Bar) and Brittany Grace (Grace’s Goodness), and weekly activities for all ages. New vendors include Octane Coffee, Phickles Pickles, the Good Food Truck Indonesian Soup Cart, Sparta Imperial Mushrooms, Many Fold Farm, and new rotating special vendors.
