Christmas Disappointment

By Nancy Leighton
Every year from midsummer on, Skip Marklein and her partner Darlene Warren work to repair and prepare their elaborate Christmas light display on East Confederate Avenue near Moreland Avenue. The display consists of a train, Santa in a helicopter, and many other whimsical characters and animals. Many area residents drive by to enjoy the show and pull to the side of the road on the wide pavement to take it all in without blocking traffic.
This year Atlanta Public Television did a program called Atlanta Sights. One of the sights was Ms. Marklein’s Christmas light display. It showed the troubleshooting of light strings, replacing broken bulbs, and setting up of the lights starting in November. The Atlanta Sights program was broadcast nearly half a dozen times leading up to Christmas.
In mid-December, Ms. Marklein looked out at the lights and noticed something was missing. Two figures, a dinosaur and a charming giraffe, were gone. Ms. Marklein estimates the valued of the figures to be about $600.
Many area homeowners spend hours and money putting up beautiful displays that brighten the holiday season for all. Theft of decorations is discouraging for those who put them out. Without them, the season would have less spirit. Ms. Marklein asks whoever took her yard ornaments to please return them with no questions asked. If someone knows where they are, they can let us know at the Porch Press.
