Calendar – June – July 2019

Editor’s note: Calendar items for upcoming months should be sent to calendar@theporchpress.com with “info4calendar” in the subject line. The next deadline for the calendar is June 25, 2019. Calendar events take place in southeast Atlanta, the area south of I-20 to Moreland Drive, and includes Grant Park, Ormewood Park, and East Atlanta.

The following activities take place every week as listed.

CHILDREN/STORY TIME

Tiny Tots Storytime. East Atlanta Library, 400 Flat Shoals Avenue SE, for newborns to 5 years, 10:30am (every Tue).

Sunday Running Group. East Atlanta Village, meet at Flat Shoals and Glenwood Avenues near Joe’s Coffee Shop, 3-mile run, 9:00am (every Sunday).

Friendship Center. Church of the Holy Comforter, 737 Woodland Avenue SE, 9:00am-1:00pm (Tues and Thurs).

Art Shows at the East Atlanta Library. 400 Flat Shoals Avenue. Meeting room. Open during regular library hours. Ask at the circulation desk if the room is locked and unoccupied. Shows typically change every two months. Check the library lobby area on the bulletin board and inside the library for additional information.

June 15-16               Art Gone Wild Art Sale. Zoo Atlanta. View a special gallery exhibition of the finished masterpieces created during Art Gone Wild Paint-Out Week. Entry to the gallery is included with general admission. See more details at www.zooatlanta.org.

June 15                     Keeper for a Day: Giant Panda. Zoo Atlanta. How do you care for a giant panda? Ages 14 and up. Learn more at www.zooatlanta.org.

Family NightCrawlers. Spend the night in the Zoo. Nature Play Club, Zoo Atlanta. Identify pollinators, discover the different parts of flowers, and build seed bombs to spread wildflowers in your backyard. This program is free, but registration is required. Register at www.zooatlanta.org.

June 17-July 19      East Atlanta Kids Club Summer Sci-Tech Fund and Fitness Camp. Brownwood Park, 602 Brownwood Ave SE. No camp held July 1-July 5. Four 1-week sessions. $150 per week /per child, with multiple session or multiple sibling discounts. Register and pay for camp online at http://bit.ly/paidcampereakc. June 22                     Pollinator Day. Zoo Atlanta. Join a day devoted to pollinators and the crucial roles they play in their ecosystems. See more at wwwzooatlanta.org.

                                    Keeper for a Day: Show Birds and Animal Ambassadors. Zoo Atlanta. Spend the morning with the Zoo’s education animal ambassadors, and venture behind the scenes to the World of Wild Theater to help with the afternoon show. Participants must be at least 14 years old. June 23                     Eastside Church Blood Drive. 468 Moreland Ave SE. We are looking for blood donors within the community to help us reach our goal of 59 participants. 9am-2pm.

June 29                     BATL Civil War to Civil Rights Tour. Near I-20 in East Atlanta and Kirkwood. Stories from the 1864 Battle of Atlanta and the 1964 Civil Rights era at locations where happened. Required advance tickets ($15) online at www.batlevent.org. Fourth of July Fireworks. Set off behind Holy Taco (Glenwood and Haas Avenues). Brought to you by the East Atlanta Strut, ListenUp Audiobooks, Holy Taco, and Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The Strut will have a booth selling East Atlanta Village T-shirts and offering information about participating in the Strut. There will be a pop-up market raffle. Apologies in advance to any frightened pets. 9:30pm.

July 6                        Brownwood Park Projects. For our forest restoration projects. we are out in densely vegetated areas. There will be bugs and there will be dirt, so plan accordingly. We recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Our projects include removal of exotic invasive plants and replanting of native species. Tools, gloves, and instruction for these projects will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own if you have a preference. 9am-12pm.

Wreath-Laying Ceremonies to Commemorate the historic 1864 Battle of Atlanta. Free. 10am at the Walker Monument at Glenwood Avenue and I-20 and 10:45 at the McPherson Monument at McPherson and Monument Avenues.

July 27-28                Wild World Weekend. Two-day cultural heritage festival featuring live entertainment, demonstrations, crafts, and more. Highlights include the Lion Dancers of the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu; an interactive Flamenco presentation with Calo Gitano Atlanta; the music-makers and storyweavers of Kuumba Storytellers; and much more. Free with general admission or Zoo Atlanta membership.
