Bike Racers Converge on Our Neighborhoods

By Henry Bryant
On Saturday, August 18, The Litespeed BMW Team hosted the first ever Twilight Criterium Bike Race in the East Atlanta Village. The event began at 2:00pm and ended at 9:00pm. The course took racers along the main drag on Flat Shoals through the Village onto Metropolitan Avenue and then onto Metropolitan Place by the Post Office. From there they curved onto Haas Avenue and then a tight turn onto Glenwood at Holy Taco. The weather threatened off and on and there was a shower or two that did not deter the racers. Racers and race goers seemed to have a great time. Some residents and business patrons were confused and inconvenienced by the closed streets and there some were comments (mostly at nearby blocked streets) that the race planners could have done a better job alerting the people who live here. Brandon Pruett won the race for Velo.
On the Sunday immediately following the East Atlanta race, the 8th Annual Grant Park Criterium by Maxxis took to its course in the Grant Park neighborhood. The race hosted by L5Flyers of the Quantum Mechanics team. Winners included Oscar Clark, Jamie Bookwalter, Brandon Pruett, Igor Rudalev, Robert Loomis, Kailin Acheson, Tyler Pittman, and in the junior divisions Flecher Lydick and Alexander Dijkema.
