BATL Gets Donation for Monument Restoration

By John Ottley, Jr.
John A. Dietrichs, Atlanta, (left), and David L. Floyd, Lilburn, (right) commandant and treasurer respectively of the Old Guard of the Gate City Guard, present a $5,000 Old Guard donation to Henry Bryant, Executive Director of the Battle of Atlanta Commemoration Organization (BATL). BATL is restoring monuments honoring two Civil War generals killed in the fighting for Atlanta in July 1864. They were General William H.T. Walker, a Confederate division commander, and General James Birdseye McPherson, commander of the Union’s Army of Tennessee. The McPherson monument is on McPherson Avenue off Moreland Avenue. Walker’s monument is on Glenwood Avenue at Wilkinson Drive in the shadow of I-20 east. The Old Guard is affiliated with the Centennial Legion, a national organization of historic military units. BATL has raised well over half of the amount needed for the restoration work towards the total of $192,000 necessary for the two monuments.
