Three Area Mrs. Winner’s Closed

By Nancy Leighton
Mrs. Winner’s Chicken and Biscuits, part of Famous Recipe Foods, filed for bankruptcy last year on November 10. Before that they had already closed down two Mrs. Winner’s stores in our area: at 590 McDonough Boulevard across from the Federal Prison and another one at 363 Hill Street at the I-20 exit. Many other Mrs. Winner’s locations were closed at the same time. The store at 403 Moreland Avenue and Faith Street, just off I-20, remained open.
In a phone interview at that time, the manager of the store on Moreland said the company had closed 14 stores and kept 14 stores open. The Moreland Avenue Mrs. Winner’s would seem to be in an ideal location to succeed, but on August 5 that too closed, along with all the others in the Atlanta metro area. The phone at the corporate offices in McDonough, Georgia, only has a recording giving former employees some instructions on collecting their last paychecks.
Mrs. Winner’s held on as long as they could. Business closures will continue to be a problem in our city and our nation until the economy improves. Supporting neighborhood businesses can help them make it through these hard times.
