Neighbors Rally Around the Atlanta Cyclorama

By Bob Titus and Jennifer Thompson
A group of neighbors and friends of the Atlanta Cyclorama gathered around its site in Grant Park on Saturday, August 27. Their mission: to protest the possible relocation, and to find out more about how to prevent the potential move of the historic painting. The Atlanta Cyclorama is the largest mural painting in the world and the initiative is to move the historic destination to another location outside southeast Atlanta. Paul Simo, Historic Preservation Committee Chair for the Grant Park Neighborhood Association, led the effort and said, “This is not the time to be considering a costly move of one of our community’s most historic elements to another part of town. This is the time to consider meaningful ways to ensure that the Atlanta Cyclorama continues to be an important and meaningful part of southeast Atlanta‘s history and heritage.”
In emails with a concerned constituent, Representative Carla Smith expressed confidence that the proposed move would not occur, as even the zoo has been considered for relocation in the past. Proactive members of the neighborhood are researching why this possibility has been raised and how to counteract this with additional marketing. Another possibility could be refreshing and renovation of the mural using local resources.
