SAND Full Body Meeting – Thursday, January 13, 2022

Call to order

Announcements: Voting rights (3 meetings, or $10 membership). 2022 Woodland Hills Rep – Nicole Thorly – Approved unanimously. Porch Press Board SAND – Paul Bolster – Approved unanimously.

Zone 6: Street racing updates – Lt Simmons was unaware of the recent street racing incident on Bill Kennedy on New Year’s Eve. The weather has been having an effect on the reduction in recent incidents. Some racers on Moreland have been cited recently. Scooter thieves – Lt Simmons was unaware of the incidents related to supposed teenagers on scooters that have been reported breaking into vehicles and brandishing firearms in Grant Park neighborhood and fringe areas of SAND. For additional information on citations issued on various crimes, contact the city 

City/State/School/Other Elected Officials (5 minutes per): City Councilmember, District 1 Jason Winston: Councilmember Winston sits on the city utilities committee and recycling should be getting picked up this week. Due to staffing issues, the city has been prioritizing trash pickup over recycling but should be caught up by the end of the month. Continue to utilize 311 for requests. Yard debris pick up should not have been delayed, so additional information on the delays is being pursued. Crime: Per Major Ries, APD crime suppression units being sent out in an effort to deter crime in Zone 6.

Zone 6 – Lt Jesse Webb: Be mindful of leaving packages or items on front porches or in mailboxes around the holidays due to increase in thefts/porch pirates.

City/State/School/Other Elected Officials: Liliana Bakhtiari – Newly Elected District 5 City Council Member. Street racing, dangerous vehicle activity, and similar meet ups are an area of concern and focus for Liliana and Jason. Jason Winston – Newly Elected District 1 City Council Member. Met with both Mayor-elect Dickens and Council President-elect Shipman to discuss agendas and priorities. Office phone number: 404-330-6039.

Social: 2022 Ormewood Park Makers Festival – SAND taking over the execution of this event. Tentative timeline aimed for June 2022. More details in the coming weeks. Sahaa CBD Atlanta Operation Giveback Clothes & Blanket Drive. Collecting items from 11AM-6PM on Sat 12/18, event is from 1-4pm.

Transportation: Update on Bill Kennedy Way. Councilmember Bakhtiari informed SAND leadership that Mayor Dickens wants to conduct neighborhood town hall regarding this situation and ways in which it can be assessed and modified to improve the safety of the neighborhood while minimizing inconvenience. More details in the coming weeks.

Land Use and Zoning (LU&Z): V-21-316 / 501 Stovall St. / Zoned R-4-Beltline – Applicant seeks a variance from the zoning regulation to reduce the front yard setback from 35’ to 24’ for the construction of a second-floor addition. LUZ: Motion to recommend approval was adopted; 13Y-0N / 1A SAND: Motion to recommend approval was adopted unanimously.

BL-21-046 / 1104 Avondale Ave / Zoned MR-4A-C-Beltline – Applicant seeks to reduce the required Lester Avenue sidewalk width from 10’ to 6’, with stated reasoning being the dead end/low foot traffic nature of the road, as well as accommodation of the Beltline spur trail in other areas of the project. LUZ: NPU Review and comment; Applicant should explore the viability of implementing a path which connects the Beltline Spur to Lester Avenue, in order to better serve residents east of the project along the eastern United Avenue corridor.

Public Safety: Ken Boff on oversized vehicles (boats, campers, delivery trucks) parked on the street. November 2021 Neighborhood Larceny from Vehicle maps Transportation (5 minutes) 

BeltLine Subarea 4 Master Plan Update: Deadline for Public Comment – 12/17. These opportunities for feedback can be found at the Social Pinpoint engagement site: https://sycamore.mysocialpinpoint.com/beltline-subarea-4-master-plan. Temporary lane closure at 950 Glenwood Avenue due to a storm water line installation. Started 10/25/2021 and lasts for about 16 weeks (Mid-Feb 2022) from 9am-4pm on weekdays. Pending permit for full street and lane closure on Delmar Ave and Palatine Ave on 12/13-12/14 for on location filming. Shoot starts 12/13/2021 at 4:30Ppm and ends 12/14/2021 at 12:00am.
