Fulton County Library System Presents the One Book, One Read Program

By Lyn Hillman

The Fulton County Library System, in partnership with the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation, is presenting the One Book, One Read program. One Book, One Read is a program available in many major cities across the United States. It is designed to encourage people to read and discuss the same book. The discussions will be held online via Zoom. The goal is to promote critical conversations, community building, and literacy while engaging with others in the same geographic area.

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Isabel Wilkerson has been chosen as the first book selection for One Book, One Read. The book compares the caste system in India with race relations in the United States and the rise of the Third Reich in pre-World War II Germany. It also examines the current state and past history of race relations. Caste was an Oprah’s Book Club pick, an Obama best book of the year, and a contender for the National Book Award.

Readers wanting to read the book and participate in the discussion are encouraged to join the One Book, One Read group at the East Atlanta Library. This group will meet monthly to discuss specific chapters of the book during January, February, and March of 2022. Parts 1 – 3 (chapters 1 – 9) were the focus of the initial meeting held on January 25. Everyone is welcome to join the two remaining discussions.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 22 – Parts 4 & 5 (Chapter 10 – 24)

TUESDAY, MARCH 22 – Parts 6 & 7 (Chapter 25 – Epilogue)

The discussion will conclude with a lecture by the author, Isabel Wilkerson, at 3:00pm on March 27 at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History.

Copies of the book are available in print and eBook format through your local Fulton County Library System branch library. All branches in the library system have been given copies of the book. If none are available at your branch, any other branch can request a copy from another branch and have it transferred to the branch closest to you. The book can also be purchased from Amazon or Barnes and Noble as well as other book stores. Copies are currently available for purchase at Bookish, an independent bookstore located in East Atlanta Village at 1188 Glenwood Avenue.

Registration is required. To register, send an email to EastAtlanta.Branch@fultoncountyga.gov to receive the Zoom Link. For more information, please contact the East Atlanta Branch of Fulton County Public Library at (404) 730-5438.
