Grant Park Conservancy Continuing with Plans to Care for Greenspace

By Michelle Blackmon

What another wild year 2021 turned out to be! Like you, your friends at the Grant Park Conservancy experienced a year of constant change and uncertainty in every aspect of our lives. But one thing has stayed the same — our commitment to care for Atlanta’s most beautiful and historic greenspace, Grant Park. This commitment includes collaborating with the Department of Parks and Recreation to rebuild the Grant Park Gazebo that burned down in the early morning hours on November 10. We are devastated by its loss and very grateful that no one was hurt.

Please consider helping us care for your favorite park by making a year-end gift to the Conservancy and becoming a member today at www.gpconservancy.org/get-involved/support/?blm_aid=24908.

Over the past five years, your Conservancy has invested over $1 million into Grant Park. In addition to restoring beautiful architectural features including the circa 1890 Lion Bridge, the 1896 Erskine Fountain, and the 1927 Milledge Fountain, we have planted hundreds of trees, installed picnic areas, and hosted thousands of volunteers to help keep the park clean and healthy. You can read more about these efforts in our 2021 Impact Report.

While COVID-19 has made us pivot in many ways, our work has not stopped. It has only grown more ambitious. Our plans for the future will ensure Grant Park continues to be an oasis of greenspace, where all are welcome to gather and reap the benefits that parks provide. GPC’s plans include:

  • Creating an outdoor classroom and theatre behind the Milledge Fountain
  • Reclaiming the fenced courtyard behind the Erskine Fountain
  • Updating the playground
  • Continuing to provide clean and friendly areas where families and friends can come together
  • Planting more trees and continuing to care for the existing canopy
  • BRINGING THE SUMMER SHADE FESTIVAL BACK TO THE PARK!

As 2021 comes to a close, please consider making a year-end gift to the Grant Park Conservancy. We are excited about the future, and in partnership with you, can continue tending to the very special greenspace we all love, historic Grant Park.
