Once there was Murphy High School named for a prominent East Atlanta Attorney who was the school system’s lawyer and helped create the first Junior High School campus for Atlanta Public Schools in East Atlanta. It became the first high school in East Atlanta. It also was one of the first schools racially integrated in Georgia. Later it was remodeled and renamed for Alonzo Crim, the first African American Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools. Crim High graduated its final class in 2020. The building is located on Clifton Avenue at Memorial Drive near I-20 and Burgess Peterson Elementary. Recently the central office for the school system was renamed the Alonzo A. Crim Center for Learning and Leadership. To avoid duplication and confusion, the School Board decided to rename the old Crim High School building The East Atlanta Campus for the time being. It currently houses the Phoenix Academy which serves nontraditional high school students. Also on the East Atlanta Campus are several other district programs and services including a daycare for children of Phoenix Academy students and a special education program.
