James Wilson Beaty, PhD, lately of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Anita Law Beaty passed away on May 11, 2021. Celebration of Life Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements made by J. Henry Stuhl Funeral Directors in downtown Charleston.
James was born April 20. 1936 in Charlotte, North Carolina, son of the late Rev. Walter Kirkpatrick Beaty and Sarah Wilson Beaty. He attended the University of South Carolina. He earned his Masters Degree from Columbia Theological Seminary as well as Masters and Doctorate Degrees from the University of South Carolina.
Before his retirement, Dr. Beaty was a professor at Beulah Heights University in the SAND neighborhood where he used his textbook Sacred Grammar to teach writing. He served as chaplain and co-director with his wife Anita of the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless for 35 years. During that time they resided in Grant Park on Glenwood Avenue.
Earlier in his career he was a professor and administrator at University of South Carolina Coastal University. He also is the author of the book Pee Wee and Me used for the podcast “Pee Wee Gaskins Was Not My Friend.” Dr. Beaty is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anita, as well as seven children, and nine grandchildren. Memorials may be made in honor of Dr. Beaty to organizations dedicated to ending homelessness wherever they may be.
