A Day of Service in East Atlanta

By Sarah K. Spencer

On Saturday, March 20, the East Atlanta Community Association (EACA) continued its Day of Service initiative for 2021, by completing a second volunteer day of giving back to the community. Volunteers included EACA members, neighborhood residents, and Atlanta City Council District 5 candidate Mandy Mahoney and her family. The volunteers gave back to senior residents by partnering with Neighbor in Need East Atlanta and Branan Towers senior community.

Neighbor in Need East Atlanta (NIN), is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that functions under the umbrella of EACA, providing emergency home repairs for low-income elderly homeowners in East Atlanta. Of the two teams of volunteers, one of them helped with two private residences that needed spring yardwork, and the other worked with Branan Towers to give the community garden and communal open space a much-needed freshening up.

Both teams reported that aside from the perfect spring weather, the highlights of the day were the connections made between community members. At the residences, new community members were introduced to longtime residents who have called East Atlanta home for over fifty years. After leaves were raked and bagged, lawns mowed, and crisp edges cut, everyone was grateful for an opportunity to connect with their neighbors.

At Branan Towers new community garden plots were constructed, furniture was cleaned or installed, existing tile mosaic was brought back to its full luster, and new shrubs were added to the landscape. Residents were excited to take advantage of the beautiful spring day and the updated garden and outdoor space.

Please join us for the next day of service in May, the date and location to be announced, available at www.eaca.net. Find out how to join the East Atlanta Community Association or learn more information about EACA, NIN, and other available volunteer opportunities in the community.
