This year marks the 15th annual Battle of Atlanta Commemoration Organization. Launched in 2004 in Brownwood Park, the organization (known as BATL) is comprised of neighborhoods situated on land where the 1864 Battle of Atlanta conflict took place. It was organized prior to the sesquicentennial commemoration of the American Civil War.

A major goal of the organization is to educate the public about the historic military significance (battle history) of the area as well as to preserve significant battlefield monuments and artifacts. Along with other groups, the Sons of Union Veterans (SUV) has, from the organization’s inception, made financial contributions to support these efforts. This year, SUV raised $1000, bringing BATL closer to its goal of $192,000. SUV member Ray Wozniak, representing Commandant Tim Klove, adds, “We Sons of Union Veterans have donated $4500 to the BATL’s Monument Restoration Fund because these monuments are historical gems. At the McPherson Monument we are reminded of the great sacrifice of preserving the nation and ending slavery.” On hand at the July 27 ceremony to present the check for $1000 was Commander Michael Reither and a living history soldier.    SUV Commandant Tim Klove is challenging neighborhoods in the area to raise additional funds to complete the restoration effort as BATL closes in on the last leg of its fundraising. BATL treasurer Dennis Burleson is actively soliciting donations both large and small from corporate and individual sources.
