An opening reception was held at ART-HAUS gallery in Grant Park on Saturday, August 4. The current show, titled Lightness in Dark, features work by Atlanta-based mixed media painter Erin Drakeford. The reception also featured a performance by guitarist and singer Kitty Snyder. According to Drakeford’s artist’s statement, she explores themes of introversion and the oppressive obligations of femininity in her mixed-media oil paintings. Her work features ethereal, abstract, human and animal figures amid bright and moody colors accented with gold foil. “I like the illusion of opulence that the gold leaf brings to the canvas, which for me, speaks to the world’s obsession with outward beauty.” In addition to painting, Erin works as a stylist and her time spent dedicated to making people beautiful influences her painting’s style and themes. She uses shallow depth of field and abstract compositions to further emphasize the themes of beauty and the superficial.
