An award-winning photo documentary show about a tragic event and its healing aftermath is now on display in the East Atlanta Branch Library meeting room. The collective of photographs, sponsored by the Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL), is entitled “For the Love of Romeo: Urban Peace.” It documents one family’s experience in the aftermath of urban gun violence.
FEAL will host a reception for the collection and the exhibitors on Saturday, April 2, from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be provided. During the reception the show’s curator, Sandra Alexander, along with friends and family will be speaking about their own experience and the photographs. Gabe Banks, an attorney with Fulton County juvenile court, will also give a short talk. Members of the community who have also experienced a loss by gun violence are encouraged to bring photographs or other mementos for display during the reception. Participants are encouraged to express their experience and opinions on the subject. Resources needed to write local and national elected officials will be provided.
Alexander explained the work by saying, “This collection of photos from my family’s life is very personal. I would never want to share this pain in such a public way but for the hope that it might change the lives of teenaged boys who, like Romeo, grew up in the inner city.”
The exhibit will be on display through mid-May. Library patrons and the community are encouraged to view the exhibit anytime during regular library hours, 10:00am to 6:00pm.
