City Recycling Clarified

By Henry Bryant
Recently a rumor has been circulating about the City of Atlanta discontinuing the recycling of glass at curbside. That seems to be just that, only a rumor. Here is a list of things that are still being recycled from your curbside bins:

  • Aluminum cans
  • Brochures, reams
  • Cardboard boxes, dry and broken down to fit into bin
  • Cartons and juice boxes
  • Envelopes, including windowed and labeled
  • File folders
  • Glass bottles; remove the lids and place in recycling cart
  • Greeting cards
  • Hard plastic labeled 1-5 and 7; remove the lids and place in recycling cart
  • Junk mail
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Office paper, all colors
  • Paperboard, cereal boxes, etc.
  • Phone books
  • Shipping boxes
  • Soft and hard back books
  • Wrapping paper

Here are the things that should NOT go into the blue bins: NO paper towels or tissues, NO plastic bags, NO hoses or wires, NO plastic pipes, NO plastic furniture, NO polystyrene, and NO wood or building materials. For recycling bins and service questions, please call 311.
Here are some tips for other familiar items:

  • Wire hangers may be returned to your dry cleaner
  • Plastic bags, wraps, and film may be recycled at your local grocery or home improvement store
  • Packing peanuts-take to UPS or shipping store
