East Atlanta Strut Wants YOU

By Michelle Rice
Is the East Atlanta Strut worth saving? The Strut can’t survive without a few more volunteers. Specifically, there are openings for volunteers to work on sponsorship, to help with festival logistics, and to help with public relations and marketing.
If you’re interested, please send a note to EAVStrut@gmail.com. If you want to share your ideas about how to take the Strut through 2015 and beyond, please send an email to the same address.
As you may know, the Strut is a fall festival that has been run by volunteers for 17 years. It features an artist’s market, kid’s area, live music, food, beer, and a parade. The basic goals of the Strut are to showcase East Atlanta as a great place to shop, eat and drink, to highlight the sense of community that makes East Atlanta a great neighborhood in which to live, and to provide a fun day out for residents and visitors of all ages.
The Strut is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and would also like to earn enough money to give something back to other neighborhood nonprofits. But sponsorship has fallen, 2014 proceeds were poor, and many of the volunteers are no longer interested in participating. It takes hundreds of hours of work to produce one day of fun for just under 10,000 people. Everyone who works on the Strut has full-time jobs, families, and other obligations. The festival needs to increase marketing, sponsorship, attendance, and revenues and also needs help recruiting the people who can do that. It would love to have your help.
(Note from editor: There were two well-attended public meetings in January. The next one is planned for February 8 after the Strut Board meets.)
