Each year the Chien Hong School of Kung Fu hosts a Chinese New Year celebration. This year they will ring in the year of the Wood Sheep on February 21 from 11:00am to 12:30pm. They ring in each year as a way to share the school’s rich Asian heritage with those who live in the Grant Park area as well as visitors from all over the Southeast.
The celebration starts with the traditional Chinese lion dance. The lion is a lucky symbol that blesses the school and the audience with good luck to keep into the new year. The kid warrior class along with special guests from other martial arts schools and disciplines—kung fu from northern China and tai chi—follow the lion dance performance. The event finishes with Chien Hong’s kung fu performance team demonstrating the school’s five animal forms, various weapons, and unbelievable iron body kung fu.
Chien Hong’s display of Chinese culture and tradition is their one major fundraiser each year. The event is open to the public with a donation of $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under.
The Chien Hong School of Kung Fu is located at 655 Memorial Drive. More information can be found on the school’s website at www.chienhong.com, on the event page at www.chienhong.com/lion-dance/, or by calling 404-525-3226.
