By Representative Tanya Miller

I’m proud to represent House District 62 in the Georgia General Assembly, covering Grant Park to College Park. I was elected in 2022 after the last redistricting left an open seat where I live, in Grant Park. I was drawn to solving some of the problems I saw — one case at a time — as a former prosecutor, and more recently a civil rights and injury attorney, now in a more systemic way.
As a freshman legislator in the minority party, it was eye-opening to learn that this “playing field” is conducted under a completely different set of rules than a court of law. It became my mission for Democrats to take the majority in the Georgia House, to restore some semblance of balance and fairness to our legislative process.
In November, my Democratic colleagues in the House elected me as their Chair, allowing me to lead our caucus’ electoral campaign work. The Georgia House Democrats have gained seats in every election since 2016, growing our ranks from 64 to 80 members; House Republicans now number 100. To get to the majority, we need to hold every seat we have and gain 11 more. Even in the tough 2024 cycle, there were 14 Republican House districts where Democrats got over 40% and 4 which Vice President Harris carried. In 2018, the last Trump midterm, Georgia House Democrats picked up 11 seats. And I’m confident we can do it again.

What can you do, from deep-blue Southeast Atlanta? Work to help get your neighbors engaged with groups like SE Atlanta Neighbors Take Action and others. In the 2024 general election, turnout in Southeast Atlanta and South Fulton cities was below the statewide average of 70%. In 2026, when we are electing a new governor and a new slate of statewide officials, every vote will count and we need to make sure our views are represented. Also look to places in Douglas, Cobb, North Fulton, Forsyth, and Gwinnett counties where you may have connections and get ready to adopt a House District there in 2026.
From healthcare and education to civil rights and democracy, your work to elect people to represent you has never been more important!
