Rally On!

By Carlen Ruth Hultgren

The Brownwood Bike Rally returns for its 20th anniversary year on September 14. With the new look of the playground comes a new look for the rally.  There will be the races, but also festivities and family-friendly activities at Brownwood Park, located at 602 Brownwood Avenue in East Atlanta Village.

As 20th annual Brownwood Bike Rally, approaches, so to does a cause for celebrating a history of community engagement in East Atlanta, that has seen thousands of kids, teens, and adults come together to rally around one another and around East Atlanta Kids Club (EAKC). Over the years, this event has included races geared toward kids, CRIT-CX events for adults, bike rodeos, and bike safety demonstrations for all ages.  There have been health fairs, arts and crafts, raffles, and vendors from the community. It’s a day to celebrate cycling as an anchor of the programming and to recognize the community of support garnered among local cycling groups, corporate sponsors, local businesses, and East Atlanta neighbors. Cycling is celebrated at EAKC, not only because it’s lots of fun for kids, but also because it represents a crucial competency that can create access to opportunities in a city where equitable access to job centers is disparate, and many Atlantans rely upon alternative and public forms of transit to get around the city.

On-site registration is available and starts at 8:00am on the day of the event, with the opening ceremonies and Fun Lap starting at 9:30am, and the first race at 9:45am, starting with the youngest racers and ending with the adults at 12:30pm. There will be awards ceremonies and activities throughout the day in the Kid Fun Zone, with lawn games, refreshments, a health fair, face painting, and more.

Join your neighbors and friends at Brownwood Park for a day of fun and fundraising for East Atlanta Kids Club and the year-round programming for deserving kids, teens, and families. The Bike Rally is always looking for willing volunteers to help. If you have it, give a couple of hours to support an organization that takes care of the community.

Online registration for this year’s event has begun. For more information and to sign up or volunteer, go to the site: https://eastatlantakids.org/brownwood-bike-rally.
