Gordon School Action

By Henry Bryant
Since the early 1990s, the Gordon Elementary School on Metropolitan Avenue behind Martha Brown Methodist Church at Moreland Ave. has been vacant. It was sold by Atlanta Public Schools to Inman Properties for development and was foreclosed upon by Inman’s investors a couple of years ago. Finally after sitting vacant for those years and then nearly a year of negotiations, financial arrangements and planning, Paces Properties is about to close on the property. Their plans are to demolish the existing building which was allowed to deteriorate severely, and then adhering to the zoning code for the land, build residential apartments on the site. Representatives of EACA are hopeful that the development can become at least somewhat “mixed use” with some commercial along the street and possibly additional parking for the village. The old building at the front was constructed in 1923 and additions were made as East Atlanta grew up through the 1950s. Demolition could take place as early as January. This is late breaking news and we will have more about it in future issues.
